About the event

Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? On Saturday 8 June 2019, the University's Information Services team will run an edit-a-thon in partnership with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). Full Wikipedia editing training will be given, followed by an editathon that will focus on improving the quality of articles about CSC's global alumni.

This anniversary event will offer you a chance to network with Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows studying and researching across Scotland, learn how to become a Wikipedia editor and to add and update profiles of CSC alumni on Wikipedia.

As the world’s largest web-based encyclopaedia, Wikipedia plays an enormous role in shaping how people relate to the world. But while the open nature of Wikipedia, in theory, allows content to be created by anyone, there remain significant imbalances in global participation and representation.

This event will equip you with the skills to be able to edit Wikipedia on any topic and to encourage others to do the same. Creating CSC alumni profiles to celebrate our 60th anniversary, your contribution will enhance Wikipedia’s aim to counter structural inequalities and to ensure a just representation of knowledge and people in the Wikipedia movement.

How do I prepare?

We are hosting this event in a computer lab so there’s no need you bring your laptop unless you have a specific setup or software on which you rely. Eduroam and guest wifi will be available on the day.

  • Create a Wikipedia account (if you only do one thing do this)
  • Learn about editing Wikipedia via our Wikipedia Basics site
  • Think about which CSC alumni you would like to write about on the day (see list below). If you have time you might want to look for a few extra sources of information in advance.

Please create an account on Wikipedia if you have not done so as yet.

  1. Join the dashboard page for today's workshop.
  2. Have a look at our new Histropedia timeline of Women's suffrage in Scotland.
  3. Have a look at our Navigation box template as an example of a Navbox template we add to the foot of pages about the Scottish suffragettes.
  4. There is a draft biography you can look at and use as an exemplar:
  5. Would you like to do more editing after today? There is a WikiProject Women in Red you can join to take part in their monthly themed editing events and we hold in-person Wiki Women in Red editing events at the University of Edinburgh too.

Helpful updates could be as simple as: Making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; Adding new inline citations/references; Adding a photo; Adding an infobox; Adding data to more fields in an existing infobox; Creating headings; Adding categories; etc.
